The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic fraternal service organization, founded by Father Michael J. McGivney in 1882 in New Haven, Connecticut, in honor of Christopher Columbus. Initially established as a mutual benefit society for low-income immigrant Catholics, it has grown into a global organization dedicated to charitable work, promoting Catholic education, and defending the faith.
With over 1.8 million members in nearly 15,000 councils, including 302 college councils, the Knights are committed to service, unity, and charity. Membership is open to practical Catholic men aged 18 and older, and consists of four degrees, each exemplifying the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism.
The St. Pius X Council meets on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30 pm at Columbus Villa, 1920 Richter Street, Kelowna, BC. Membership offers opportunities to serve the community, support the Church, and engage in social causes, such as food drives, Special Olympics, and various charitable initiatives. Knights are also eligible for life insurance through the Order, one of the most highly-rated insurance programs available.
The Knights’ legacy of charitable giving is unmatched. In 2013, the Order donated over $170 million to charity and provided more than 70 million hours of volunteer service. The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul (SSVP) is a global lay Catholic organization founded in France by Blessed Frederick Ozanam. Its mission is rooted in Christian charity, with a focus on assisting those in need—physically, spiritually, and socially. Inspired by the call to “Go Out to the Poor,” the Society extends its help to vulnerable populations, addressing their various needs and embodying the teachings of Christ.
The Society of Saint Vincent de Paul bears witness to its faith through acts of charity and social justice. Volunteers, known as Vincentians, conduct home visits within parish boundaries, helping the needy directly. The Society also organizes initiatives such as toy drives and giving trees during the Christmas season, a time when many families face heightened emotional and financial challenges.
Regular meetings are held on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7:30 pm in the parish, where all are welcome to join in this important mission. To volunteer or seek assistance, individuals can reach out by leaving a message at 250-762-2577.
Mission
The mission of the Society is to live the Gospel by serving Christ in the poor with love, respect, justice, and joy. This service reflects the Society’s core values, which include:
- Seeing Christ in everyone they serve;
- Coming together as a family of Vincentians;
- Establishing personal contact with the poor;
- Offering help in all possible ways.
Logo Significance
The fish symbol in the Society’s logo represents Christianity. The eye of the fish signifies the vigilant eye of God, ever watching over and assisting the poor. The knot at the tail symbolizes unity and the bond between Vincentians and those they serve. The circle surrounding the logo emphasizes the global nature of SSVP as an international society. The phrase “Serviens in spe” translates to “To serve in hope,” a reflection of the Society’s mission to provide hope through the love of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
The GO GROW & GLOW (3G) Youth Festival marked a transformative day for the youthful members of St. Pius X Parish. This event, embodying the spirit of progression, enrichment, and radiance, provided a profound journey of faith for all attendees.
Attendance and Participation: The festival drew a remarkable audience of 150 participants, primarily from our parish’s bi-weekly Children and Youth Ministry, IGNITE. In addition to our local attendees, we were pleased to welcome guests from neighboring parishes in Kelowna, Penticton, and Summerland. Under the guidance of IGNITE, we aim to impart the gospel’s message to the next generation, fostering spiritual growth and community.
Future Endeavors: We look forward to continuing this journey with a series of enriching activities designed to respond to God’s calling, deepen spiritual understanding, and spread His divine light throughout our community.
Gratitude and Appreciation: Our heartfelt thanks go to the youth and couples from Vancouver who generously volunteered and covered their transportation costs through missionary funds. In recognition of their selfless contributions, our parish extends a spiritual bouquet as a token of our appreciation.
We also express sincere gratitude to everyone who made this event possible: those who offered prayers, our dedicated youth team, supportive parents, generous donors, gracious hosts, and culinary volunteers who assisted after the 11 am Mass. May the Holy Family—Jesus, Mary, and Joseph—bless us all abundantly.
Closing Thoughts: In our mission to fervently love the Lord our God, we find the vibrant pulse of our collective endeavor. May we continue to grow in faith, shine in our purpose, and glow with the love of Christ.
In Christ,
The IGNITE Youth Ministry Team
