Church History of St. Pius X Parish

In response to the growing Catholic population in Kelowna, it was determined that the old Immaculate Conception Church on Sutherland Avenue could no longer accommodate the expanding congregation. His Excellency Bishop Wilfrid Emmett Doyle, along with Fr. Anderson, Fr. Martin, Jack Bedford, Fred Vetter, and Ernie Cowan, gathered to discuss the creation of a new parish. They focused on selecting a site, determining boundaries, and securing the necessary finances.
The architect chosen for the church design was Michael E. Utley, with the firm of Davis and Taylor responsible for construction. The church was designed to seat 350 people, and the land for the new church was purchased from the Bocklage property, located at the corner of Glenmore Road (now Gordon Avenue) and Fuller. This marked the beginning of the newly established St. Pius X Parish.
During this period, the Roman Catholic Church was under the leadership of His Holiness Pope John XXIII. Canada was governed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, with Governor General Georges Vanier serving as her representative. Vanier made history as the first Roman Catholic to hold the position of Governor General of Canada. The Conservative Party, led by John Diefenbaker, governed the country, while the Province of British Columbia was led by W.A.C. Bennett of the Social Credit Party, a resident of Kelowna. The Mayor of Kelowna at the time was R.F. Parkinson.
